The Flex Mod Schedule is a two phase modified block schedule that fits together without conflicts, is that “clear as mud?” It took me 2 weeks of staring at the template, a road trip to South Carolina, and several people giving me their explanations to begin to grasp the concept.
Our Superintendent challenged us to find something better than our current “traditional schedule” and eliminate subs at the High School Level. Wow, what a challenge! Our HS Leadership Team received the suggestion from a Middle School teacher in an email to look at Flex Mod. She felt as if the schedule might meet these challenges. She was right, and we are living the Flex Mod Schedule!
We spent the spring of last year trying to decide if this schedule would work for us. We held teacher think tanks, collaborated, and planned for our future. Many teachers were gung ho, many were reluctant to change from what they knew and were comfortable with, and some were good either way. Our Leadership Team decided that before we implemented a change this large we would have a vote by our staff. The vote turned out as expected- and the Flex Mod is year one implementation!
Are we experiencing an implementation dip? Sure we are, there are some teachers not understanding our ILT procedures, some students are choosing to skip class, some students are not using our ILT times in the appropriate way. It is a beautiful thing, that’s right- seeing teachers and students learn together has been inspiring. Our teacher’s are role models for our students. They are modeling a growth mindset as they go through the changes to implement the Flex Mod. I can’t wait to see this model grow into the future and the students will be the ones who benefit from the personal responsibility!
Here is our schedule template- enjoy!
